With the latest IHS Markit forecast predicting that smart city device shipments will eventually surpass two billion by 2030, Syed Zaeem Hosain, a founder and Chief Technical Officer of Aeris and oneM2M representative, will discuss how an open-standards approach towards Internet of Things (IoT) data is driving smart city deployments on a mass-scale.
During the panel discussion on open smart city data at the Annual Smart Cities International Symposium, Hosain will emphasise how a horizontal approach to IoT is enabling more smart city initiatives by ensuring cost-effective deployments – reducing OpEx by avoiding vendor lock-in and system-integration fees. He will also discuss how interoperability between devices can ensure the privacy of smart city data, reducing industrial IoT security concerns.
The panel discussion will also cover:
- How the industry must balance privacy and security concerns with regards to smart city open data;
- How adapting an open data smart city approach can increase ROI and citizen engagement; and
- The risks of facing smart city data silos.
Hosain’s co-panellists include Jason Hare, Open Data Evangelist at OpenDataSoft, Paul Baker, CEO at Webitects, David Portnoy, Founder of Demand-Driven Open Data, and Mike Nawrocki, Vice President of Technology and Solutions at ATIS.
Syed Zaeem Hosain is responsible for the architecture and future direction of Aeris’ networks, development programs and technology strategy. He is focused on, and greatly involved, in the development of Machine-to-Machine (M2M) networks, IoT applications and cellular technologies for enterprises, original equipment manufacturers and services providers.
Hosain actively contributes to leading-edge, IoT industry bodies, holding the positions of:
- Chairman of the IoT M2M Council (IMC);
- Chairman of the Global M2M Realization Forum (GM2MRF);
- Chairman of the International Forum on ANSI-41 Standards Technology (IFAST);
- Board member of the Mobility Development Group (MDG); and
- Member of the Future of Automotive Security Technology Research (FASTR) and oneM2M, the global IoT standards initiative.
Hosain is the author of “The Definitive Guide: The Internet of Things for Business, Second Edition.”
The keynote ‘To Open Smart City Data or Not?’ will be held at the 2nd Annual Smart Cities International Symposium & Exhibition 2018 on Thursday, January 18, 2018 at 10:45 am (CST).
Briefings with Hosain are available at various times during the event and telephone interviews can also be arranged. oneM2M is the global standards initiative that covers requirements, architecture, API specifications, security solutions and interoperability for Machine-to-Machine and IoT technologies. oneM2M was formed in 2012 and consists of eight of the world’s preeminent standards development organisations: ARIB (Japan), ATIS (U.S.), CCSA (China), ETSI (Europe), TIA (U.S.), TSDSI (India), TTA (Korea), and TTC (Japan), together with five industry fora or consortia (Broadband Forum, CEN, CENELEC, GlobalPlatform, OMA) and over 200 member organisations. oneM2M specifications provide a framework to support applications and services such as the smart grid, connected car, home automation, public safety, and health. oneM2M actively encourages industry associations and forums with specific application requirements to participate in oneM2M, in order to ensure that the solutions developed support their specific needs. For more information, including how to join and participate in oneM2M, see: www.onem2m.org.
