LTE-M is a bi-directional, standards-based protocol within the same spectrum as LTE. This low-power, wide-area (LPWA) technology features enhanced indoor and subterranean coverage; is designed for low-bandwidth uses thereby extending battery life; reduces data transport costs (via non-continuous transmittal schedules); and comes with the added benefit of making use of less expensive radio modules.

Battery Life Gets Better, Lasts Longer

Earlier versions of connectivity technologies employed an “always on” methodology. This created a situation where the IoT device constantly was listening for messages, for new information. This “always on” condition meant that batteries were engaged all the time, radically lowering their life span.

With LTE-M, devices can enter a “sleep” or power saving mode), and wake up only periodically while connected.

The extended discontinuous reception (eDRX) enables devices to reduce power consumption by extending the period of time they remain “asleep” (avoiding 24 /7 power consumption), allowing batteries to last much longer. Up to 10 years, depending on the device.

Access to optimal coverage (multiple networks, no steering) further minimizes battery drain.

Entering the Age of Lower-Cost IoT

Low cost modules can provide up to a 50% reduction in costs over comparable IoT devices. Today, in North America, an LTE module, purchased in bulk, could run between $20-30 per unit. On the other side of the equation, an LPWA module, purchased in bulk, could lower the cost to about $10 per unit.

For large deployments, with thousand on units deployed, this is significant. And as the technology matures even more, the price for IoT modules should fall even further, to between $5 and $10 per unit.
