The market for intelligent vending machines is rapidly expanding as technology evolves to transform the machines by adding uses such as touch-screen controls, cashless payments, real time monitoring, credit card acceptance, route management, and machine audits, and more.
Shipments of intelligent vending machines are expected to increase at a 49 percent compound annual growth rate from 2010 to 2016, according to a Frost & Sullivan report, published by Intel. The research firm predicted the total number of intelligent machines will reach 2 million units by 2016.
Machine-to-machine (M2M) communications are playing an important role in these solutions as the value of cellular connections becomes apparent.
VendNovation, a provider of automated vend tracking and reporting technology, is developing a card reader solution for Wittern Groups vending machines using an M2M solution from Aeris Communications.
VendNovation offers Web-based software tied to its intelligent vending controllers, enabling automated inventory tracking, per-product item restrictions, point of sale integration, routable system alerts, and remote machine configuration.
Cal Bauer, VendNovation Vice President, said the Aeris cellular M2M service is an ideal connectivity solution for intelligent vending machines. Its often not possible for machines to use to land lines so you want to use a cellular modem on the Internet, using the Aeris network, Bauer said. Were using an Aeris-certified modem connected to the Aeris network, along with management tools that allow us to act and do diagnostics through the Aeris portal, AerPort.
Aeris low costs also make it an attractive M2M solution.
VendNovation and Aeris are in a sweet spot in the development of intelligent vending machines and M2m communications. Were excited about this market, Bauer said.
